“So this is what it has all come down to, writes Marcus, two barking mad, half-drowned rats floating downriver on a very leaky raft!”

The Rat Race Kingdom is a darkly magnificent story of conflict, courage and survival. It is also a powerful allegorical animal fable that raises questions not just about political systems but human nature itself. Closely corresponding to recent political events, whilst people and nations squabble in pursuit of survival and dominance, the real danger, global warming, is continually and tragically sidelined.

Marcus and his mother Petronius have survived a second Great Flood that has devastated River Rat country, homeland to mainly white rats.

The war between River Rat country and Caligula has prompted the government to crack down on security in the face of the all-pervading threat of terrorism. Rapidly all political and civil liberties are stripped away, and the population turned into a mass of drones unable to think for themselves. While Marcus is away on a quest to persuade Caligula to give up his mass arsenal of destruction, ‘Watcher’ programs, gigantic eating feasts and the deliberate stoking of the fires of fear by those in power combine to keep everyone docile. When the populace rebel ‘Newspeak ’Training Academy and the latest horrific advances in weapons technology ensures everyone’s acceptance of the unacceptable. Marcus is determined to warn everyone to the real threat to their existence, and Natures warnings. But Brutus’ spin-doctor Assinius has other ideas.
